So how did you start the New Year? Me I ran for the first time since my half marathon in September. I was worried that my ankle wouldn't hold out.
Going to bed last night I checked the weather and they were calling for snow in the afternoon. I woke up to snow on the ground and was a bit concerned about my foot.
We get the the race and the snow is falling heavier that before. We all go in and sign up for the race and mingle with everyone that we know. Some stretch out, some go through the pre-race rituals, me? I go find a quiet spot and think and reflect and today that spot was inside the arena.
Anyways the horn goes off and I start running. The snow is blowing from the West and was nasty. Last year it was in the -40's C/F so this was a welcoming relief this year. The wind did suck still but it was ok. As I'm running I notice the 1km marker and I'm running at like. 5:25 km pace. I knew I was going to crash if I kept it up. I eased back a bit and walked at the 10 minute mark because that's what I do.
We get the call to go line up and get ready for the race to start. I get out there and well yup it's still snowing. The wind was coming from the west and what do I realize? I forgot my gloves on the table. So the horn goes off and I start off running at the back of the pack, since this is my first run back since dislocating the tendon in my foot.
My goal for this race was to just finish, and that is what I did. My Strava app said I did 5.1 km's in 35:38 mins, but I don't know my official time yet. But I had fun and that is all that matters. I feel good, my ankle is feeling alright and now it is time to have a tea, relax and enjoy the evening as 4:30 comes early and the gym won't work itself out.
